Advocating Wild has today joined a group of leading expert organisations, intending to send a strongly supported letter to the Minister of Environment and Infrastructure of Sint Maarten, a Dutch Territory in the Caribbean.

Fundamentally flawed plans to exterminate least 450 of the free-living troop of vervet monkeys have reportedly been approved, with Authorities intending to fund the Nature Foundation of St Maarten to capture and euthanise the animals over the next three years.

The Born free Foundation USA have drafted an appeal to Minister Egbert Doran to reconsider the plans and instead "adopt a sterilization program, which will provide a permanent, yet humane, solution for the monkey population."

* Advocating Wild supports the stance that wild animals should not be bought or sold

or used in public interactions, performances or theatrical shows. Wildlife should not be bred unless part of a conservation breeding programme in which the animals involved are being responsibly released back into the wild.

Advocating wild understands that on occasion wild animals may require human intervention and/or care and that sometimes it might not be possible to return those animals to their natural habitat. Those animals should be provided only genuine sanctuary where they are kept in conditions that meet their species specific needs in a natural way.
